Sci-Fi Expo Postgame

Day one of the convention started terribly slow for me. I really thought the weekend was going to be bad and that I was gonna wind up not doing much business. But I should have never doubted a Ben Stevens and Mark Walters show. Mid-day it picked right up and keep going strong the rest of the weekend. I think that there were so many great media guests people spent most of the morning making the rounds to them.

Big, big thanks to Mark and Ben, I always appreciate them having me out. Be sure to mark your calendars for their next show in May. Mark said I was definitely in for that one, so I'm really looking forward to it. It'll be at the new Irving Convention Center, the place looks awesome. Stan Lee and Leonard Nimoy are already lined up, so you know it's gonna be big!

Above are some of the commissions I did during the show. Thanks to everybody that stopped by my table.

Dead@17 Commission - Nara vs Violet

Here is a piece someone recently commissioned me to do. It's Dead@17's Nara Kilday battling Violet Grey from the end of Blood of Saints. The only tweak to it is he wanted Nara in a "goth punky outfit", which I was more than willing to provide. I'm pretty happy with how this piece turned out. It came together pretty quickly. One thumbnail got me the pose I wanted and it took from there. This is ink on bristol, colored with Prismacolors. Hope you like it.

Dallas Comic Con Wrap-Up

Once again I had a great time at the Dallas Comic Con and as always I have Mark Walters and Ben Stevens to thank for it. Guys, thanks for inviting me and congratulations for putting on such successful show. If you’ve never come out to one of their conventions, you really should. They have Shatner coming to the next one, hopefully I can get to be a part of that one too.

Unfortunately I could only do Saturday this past weekend as I had my boy’s 2nd birthday party on Sunday, which was also a great time. Maybe I can get Shatner for the next one of those? But even just doing the con for one day, I did a ton of drawing. Thanks to everyone who came by my table to either commission me or just to say hello, I always appreciate it. There are a lot of great artists at these shows, so I’m honored that anyone would choose to spend their hard-earned dollars on my work.

Here is a look at some of the pieces I did. There are several characters I’ve never drawn before in my life, but I like that. It’s something new and gets me out of my comfort zone. I like the Jaguar and Caveman Batman a lot and really enjoyed doing the "Breaking Bad" one. The guy who commissioned it gave me a choice of that or Gorillaz!

Here is a video someone posted about the show. At the 1:54 mark, you can see your's truly actually doing one of those pieces. If you want to see that hot BSG gal, then start a few seconds before me.

Texas Comicon Wrap-up

Thanks to everyone who stopped by my table in San Antonio this past weekend and a big thanks to Kris Kidd for the inviting me as a guest, I really appreciate it. It was my first convention there and I had a great time. Sunday was pretty slow for me, but Saturday was fantastic, I drew most of the day. I also got to meet and hang out with a bunch of other creators. Brent Peeples (who I already knew), Christian Beranek, Tony DiGerolamo, Michael Champion, Chris Summers, Scott Zirkel, Kennon James, and Chris Fulton, just to name a few. And on Sunday, Brent, Michael, Kennon, Chris and I participated in an event where each of us were paired up with con-goer, who sketched out a drawing in pencil, then we inked it and jazzed it up and at the end they got to take home a original piece that they collaborated on with us. Pretty cool. Here are some of the drawings I did on Saturday.

Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn Pin-up

Here's a new piece I did in trade for a Spookytown pin-up. Went a little of my comfort zone with this one. I wanted to do it without the usual think black lines outlining everything and define the shapes with colors as much as I could. So after I did my rough sketch, I blew it up, light-tabled it under my Bristol board, drew it in blueline pencil and then colored it with markers. Here is the finished piece and the rough sketch. Hope you like it.

Sci-Fi Expo 2010 Thanks

Big thanks to everyone who came by my table at the convention this past weekend. Had a pretty decent show considering it was more sci-fi than comic book. Thanks to Ben and Mark for having me, I always appreciate it. Here are just some of the commissions I did. For some reason Supergirl and Harley Quinn were big players, did three of each. Couple of Wolverines. Two of those Captain Mal / Dr. Horrible mash-ups shown here. Two Zatannas. Hit Girl (first time drawing her), Willow (also first time I think), Psylocke, Joker (as Mad Hatter with Harley/Alice), Lara Croft, Jayne Cobb (who I got to meet at at the show) and also from Firefly, Wash ... "I am a leaf on the wind - watch how I..."

Dallas Comic Con Thanks

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who stopped by my table at the Dallas Comic Con. I was lucky enough to be kept busy the entire show. I'm not sure how many sketches I did, but it was a ton. I was only able to get up twice the first day and once the second day. I drew all day, both days. So, thanks to everyone who had a hand in that. Especially to Paul, who got at least 9 sketches from me. Several things that have never happened to me before happened at this show. I almost ran out of black Prismacolor markers, I DID run out of bristol board (Thank you John Lucas for hooking me up with more) and I had to turn down a couple of commissions towards the end because I wouldn't have had time to do them. Apologies to those folks. Thanks to Mark and Ben for having me there and for putting on a great show. Here are some of the pieces I did...

Dallas Comic Con Aftermath

I had a great time at the Dallas Comic Con this past weekend. Ben and Mark really outdid themselves. I hope this con fills the void left by Wizard World Texas, I think it eventually could. The show was packed and I drew non-stop on Saturday, it was crazy, the busiest I've ever been. I believe the final tally was ... 21 Pre-Drawn Sketch Cards, 6 New Sketch Cards, 4 Pre-Drawn Color Sketches, 14 New Color Sketches, 8 New BW Sketches, 1 Shades TPB, 3 Prints.

Obviously, the Sketch Cards were a big hit since I sold almost half of them. I'm definitely gonna keep doing them, I think it's an affordable way to get a full color original piece of art. I'm on a GI Joe kick right now, so I've been doing Dr. Mindbender, Major Bludd, Firefly, Torch, Lady Jaye, Spirit, Eels, Tomax, Xamot, Cobra Commander (hooded) and more. I also need to replace my Storm Shadow, Snake Eyes and Baroness that sold at the show. I'll also be working on some Star Wars cards too.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by, I appreciate it. Here are some of the pieces I did during the show...

Other Artists on Spookytown

I've been collecting original art of other artist's take on Spookytown characters. If the artist is a friend of mine, I've been lucky to work out a trade, sketch for sketch. If they're someone I'm not on personal terms with, I've paid for the commission. Any artist that would like to trade, drop me a line. Reference material here.... http://www.spookytown.net

More Color Sketch Cards

Here are the last of the first batch of cards that I will be selling at conventions. I like the GI Adventure Teams guys, Emma Frost and Lobster Johnson a lot out of these. In just over a week I did 45 of them. Also, here's a shoot of all of them in their little plastic sleeves.

Color Sketch Cards

I've been knocking out a bunch of these trading card size color sketches to sell at shows. I'll have these at the Dallas Comic Con this weekend. They each come in their on hard plastic sleeve too. I really like Storm Shadow, Yoda, Black Canary, Slave Leia, Catwoman, Gi Joe Adventure Team Guy, Zatanna and Destro. And these are a lot of fun to do, I'm getting addicted to it. I should have more by the end of the week.
