Cal Slayton Sketchbook Volume 1

As I mentioned in my post about my 2010 goals, I wanted to publish a sketchbook this year through one of the print-on-demand sites. Well, I'm happy to say I can check that off my list.

Cal Slayton Sketchbook Volume 1 is now available through Lulu. It's a 64 page, full color, perfect bound 8.5" x 11" book. It contains about 180 images. Comic book work, commissions, rough sketches, vector art, sketch cards. It's a huge collection of work I've down over the past several years.

I got my first copy the other day and think the printing turned out pretty great. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality. I hope they can keep up that consistency because it looks nice. Here are a few photos I took of it. You can also see a bunch of preview pages on Lulu.

Starting my Sketchbook

Or Art Book or whatever. A book with a bunch of art. Some finished pieces, some doodles and rough sketches. Most of the stuff you see here are finished pieces, pin-ups and stuff. I'm in the process of collecting all the images and getting them into an InDesign document. Once I have it designed, I'll publish it through Lulu or some other print-on-demand site. My plan is to have it ready before Summer. There is an upcoming show I want to be able to sell it at. A show I haven't announced yet, just waiting for them to update their site and make it official. Anyway, I'm excited to be working on it bit by bit between freelance projects, can't wait to have it in my hands.

Dallas Comic Con and Spookytown Sketchbooks

Come out to the Richardson Convention this Saturday and Sunday, June 30 and July 1 for the Dallas Comic Con. I will be there as one of the guest comic book artists. Not only will I being do drawings, selling comics and original art, but also at this show I will be debuting my new Spookytown Sketchbook.

It’s a 20-page mini-comic type book containing over 70 sketches, drawings and doodles that I’ve done will preparing to start the graphic novel. I printed up a limited edition of 100 books, so I can have plenty to last me over the next year of conventions because I figure it’s gonna take me a while to finish the graphic novel. Each is hand numbered and signed.

If you like horror comics, film noir, hard-boiled detectives, zombies, styles from the 40s/50s or dames that can handle themselves, this is the sketchbook for you.
